Starfish is the story of Jenny Avery and Curt Malone. Jenny is a freelance crime reporter from Palm Beach Shores and Curt, a builder from Dallas. They meet in 1988 at the home of their mutual friend, Pat Hoffman, who owns the Merlinn Guesthouse in Key West. Although their love for each other is obvious, it is doubtful it will ever be acknowledged because of secrets from the past neither seems willing to share.
After several wrong turns and what seems to be a permanent separation from each other, they turn their full attention to their professional lives. Jenny returns to West Palm Beach to investigate a story about a recent kidnapping, sexual assault and attempted murder of two young girls by middle-aged brothers. It is gut-wrenching for her to interview the perpetrators, several incarcerated child sex offenders and the counselor who is working with the young survivors of this horrendous crime. But, by the time she has finished the background work and is ready to put her stories into the computer, Jenny has been freed of her haunted past and knows she will be able to commit to a life with Curt, if he still wants one with her.
Having a life with Jenny is all Curt can think about as he travels to building sites in the northeastern part of the United States, working to build the finest hotels in the country. When he goes back to oversee one of his Virginia sites, he picks up a Sunday paper and sees Jenny's byline above a story on victim's rights. He is determined she will be back with him before the day is over and after a couple of phone calls, he learns where she is in Virginia Beach and drives to her hotel. She is overjoyed to be back in his arms. Now, with the past ready to be revealed and put away where it belongs, he takes the beautiful engagement ring from his pocket, asks her to be his wife and shows her a photograph of their beautiful new home she has loved since they first saw it at the southernmost tip of continental United States, on the Atlantic shoreline of Key West.
Will they marry and live in that beautiful house of her dreams? Will they have those adorable children Curt has promised? And what about the career she has devoted her life to for so long? Will she give it all up to live the quieter life of wife and mother while writing those novels tucked away in her heart for so long? Will they have it all, at last, or will fate intervene to take it away once again?
